State Budget Needs to Maintain Investments in ALL Modes of Transportation

  • We need investments to expand safe, convenient, efficient, and affordable transit options, support bicycle and pedestrian mobility, AND we need to fix our roads to relieve congestion and to ensure people can get to their jobs and homes safely.
  • People need more options and flexibility to get where they need to go efficiently. In a state of nearly 40 million people, we cannot afford to scale back the progress we’ve made to provide more mobility options including transit and commuter rail, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, and well-maintained and safe roads.
  • Governor Newsom and Legislators are considering cuts to transit funding and fund shifts away from investments in our state highways – both proposals will set California back and negate much of the progress the state and locals have made in recent years to improve the condition of and safety on our highways, roads, bridges and improvements to transit to make alternatives to the personal vehicle more accessible, affordable, safe, and convenient.
  • The Governor and Legislature should maintain state and federal investments in highways. They should also fund critical short-term transit operations needs with uncommitted cap-and-trade dollars, utilizing the state’s share of the diesel sales tax, and maintaining and making more flexible last year’s multiyear investment in the transit capital program.
  • California’s leaders have set a goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2035. The state will not reach our climate goals without investing in fixing our state’s roads and bridges. We must invest in making our transportation system more efficient.
  • Budgets are expressions of priorities – Governor Newsom and the Legislature have made clear investments in infrastructure to increase mobility options, improve safety of the traveling public, support a robust economy, and reduce the impacts of climate change are at the top of the agenda. The 2023-24 budget act should reflect those priorities by maintaining investments in ALL transportation modes.
